LASA – Aims & Objectives

When new legislation is proposed by government, the Landlords Association of South Africa (LASA) carefully reviews it to assess the potential positive and negative impacts on all affected parties.

Experience has shown that not all members of parliament fully understand how proposed laws may affect landlords, tenants, and the broader housing market. As such, LASA serves as a unified voice for landlords and may, where appropriate, engage with lawmakers to influence or amend legislation in a way that achieves government objectives without overburdening landlords with unnecessary regulation.

Our goal is to preserve the incentive for existing and prospective landlords to invest in housing—ensuring a steady supply of accommodation across South Africa. A healthy rental sector helps reduce eviction rates and alleviates pressure on the government to meet national housing demands. Through this, overregulation can be avoided.

Together with our members, LASA is committed to protecting landlord interests and promoting a fair and balanced legal framework between landlords and tenants.

We believe effective legislation must continue to encourage investment in property—by ensuring that landlords can operate without unnecessary risks or barriers.

Our Core Objectives

• Develop standardised documents and procedures that promote best practices among LASA members
• Lobby government representatives regarding any existing or proposed legislation that may negatively affect landlords
• Build strategic partnerships with other organisations to advance the interests of our members
• Provide members with access to cost-effective and discounted services

A key part of achieving these objectives is ensuring that all legislation—current or proposed—offers a fair and reasonable balance between the rights and responsibilities of landlords, agents, and tenants. This balance must not undermine our members’ investments or ability to operate within the sector.
